Primary Concern:
Thermal (too hot & too cold)

Location:
Eltham VIC

Situated 25 km away from Melbourne's CBD, Eltham has been acclaimed by many for its greenery and peaceful environment.  Its serenity has comforted the community in their busy lives for years. Despite Eltham's sensational offerings, Victoria's extreme weather can make some homes uncomfortably cold in winter and hot in summer.  Magnetite Melbourne was called to improve the glazing performance in this beautiful sandstone house. Due to the complexity of the windows and skylights, which were large with multiple angles, the Magnetite system was determined the most effective way to achieve the desired result

The Magnetite Classic system was retrofitted under the large skylight panels. Due to the size a clear acrylic stiffening bar was attached to give the panels support without interrupting the flow and aesthetics of the roof design. The floor-to-ceiling fixed windows were also treated in this family room. Magnetite’s 4.5mm acrylic glazing improved the thermal comfort of the room, keeping the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

This renovated home had a combination of fixed, sliding and awning windows. Magnetite's 4.5mm glazing panels were installed to the inside of the existing windows and doors in the bedroom and lounge. A Slider system was added to the sliding door which allows for convenient and easy access to open the door. To achieve the best thermal insulation result, Magnetite panels were attached directly to the timber face of the existing windows. This method allowed for an ideal air gap to maximize heat and cold insulation and also ensure adequate soundproofing. Our customer was very pleased with the result.

At the end of the job the customer was over joyed with the results and commended the team on their hard work rating his experience as “Excellent”.

In a follow up letter several months later the client again expressed their happiness with the work further stating.
Your Installation team demonstrated a very high degree of ingenuity and resourcefulness to complete the work, and their pleasant demeanor throughout reflected great credit upon themselves and the company.”

Primary Concern:
Thermal (too hot)

Location:
North Rocks NSW

Away from a sea breeze many residents in the Hill district can find the summer heat stifling. This is exactly what drove, a family in North Rocks to double glaze their existing windows and moderate the temperature of their home . Our customer has floor to ceiling glass overlooking Muirfield Golf Course which was letting in too much heat in summer and too much cold in winter. Situated next to a noisy walkway, this family was also hoping to reduce noise. In addition to reducing excessive heat, cold and noise, maintaining the views over the golf course was a key decision factor when looking for a solution.

Several solution such as tinting and curtains were considered in the decision making process. On the recommendation of a friend in Canberra who had used Magnetite, or retrofit double glazing solution was chosen. As a secondary glazing system, Magnetite solved all the challenges, combatting both soundproofing and thermal insulation as well as retaining the views.

This renovated home had a combination of fixed, sliding and awning windows. Magnetite's 4.5mm glazing panels were installed to the inside of the existing windows and doors in the bedroom and lounge. This method allowed for an ideal air gap to maximize heat and cold insulation and also ensure adequate soundproofing. Our customer was very pleased with the result.

Following the installation, she noticed a clear improvement in their level of comfort stating: "On a recent hot day the thermometer on the veranda was 37 degrees Celsius and the one inside was 11 degrees cooler. That is an improvement. Also the sounds from outside are muffled now."
The customer confirmed their satisfaction and further commented on Magnetite's aesthetic feature, Visitors often don't notice the Magnetite as it blends in so well with the look of the windows. None of our view was lost!"

Winter can be a beautiful time of year with crisp, cool nights and sunny days. Unfortunately, it is also a time that our windows tend to collect condensation. We like to keep the house closed up to retain heat, but this can mean less ventilation, a key cause of condensation.

Magnetite's acrylic glazing creates a thermal barrier at the window which limits the contact between the warm and cold air and helps to reduce condensation on the window. The picture on this page is an installation in Canberra. The left-hand side of the glass, with the condensation, doesn't have Magnetite double glazed windows installed. The right-hand side of the glass, with the clearer view, has Magnetite installed. As the existing window is aluminum framed it is important that our Magnetite panels insulate the entire window (frame and glass) to get the best results.

Condensation occurs when warm moist air comes in contact with cooler air or surfaces. As the warmer air cools, it can't hold as much moisture. Excessive moisture in a room can be the result of various sources: steam from cooking, showers, clothes dryers, un-flued gas heaters, washing machines, indoor plants, even evaporation from your body and breathing. Once water vapor is in the air, it easily travels to other areas of the house where it can come into contact with cooler surfaces and condense.

The most common places for condensation to occur are windows. Corners of rooms are also prone because they tend to be cooler and have less air movement. When excess moisture is combined with poor ventilation, the chances for condensation are high. This excess moisture can lead to mold growth; it can also damage window sills and furnishings. Ultimately, it affects the view through your window. Condensation will form on any surface when it is below the dew point temperature of the surrounding air. Generally, small quantities of condensation are tolerable provided it can dry without causing damage. If the environment remains moist for a substantial period of time degradation may occur through fungal growth, mold, timber rot and corrosion.

In order to avoid condensation, the surface temperature must be increased or the moisture in the surrounding air must be reduced. It is important that a room is adequately ventilated during the day. Mould can trigger allergies and asthma which affects you and your family's health and quality of life.

Why wouldn't you want to live close to the city? There is no doubt that Sydney's inner city living has its advantages. There are plenty of amenities within close proximity and a shorter commute for those who work in the CBD. Unfortunately, for all the convenience of inner city living, high density housing can sacrifice comfort due to excessive noise from neighbours, traffic, or in Sydney's case, aircraft noise.

The Challenge
Situated on busy Parramatta Rd, this recently purchased art deco unit was plagued by constant heavy traffic noise. Parramatta Rd is one of Sydney's most congested roads with noise from cars, buses and trucks, seven days a week. On a friend's recommendation, the client called Magnetite Sydney prior to purchasing the unit. Magnetite Sydney was tasked with turning this noisy inner west apartment into a comfortable home.

The Works
Magnetite retrofitted seven existing double hung windows with our secondary window system using 10mm acoustic glazing. An air cavity of close to 100mm was created to achieve the best noise reduction. While air vents in double brick buildings can allow ventilation, they also let in lots of noise and pollution. So, for a complete sound solution, removable vent covers were also retrofitted to ensure maximum noise reduction.

Dollars and Sense
Our savvy client was very pleased with the noise reduction. He also complimented the clean, organized and professional installation. Despite having the property situated on one of the busiest highways in Sydney, he was confident Magnetite would resolve the noise concern. This allowed him to snatch a bargain and save himself a small fortune.

"saved over $100,000 by living here compared to a similar unit only 2 blocks away!"€

Magnetite double glazing system successfully reduced the road noise and transformed this Sydney inner west art deco apartment into a quiet and comfortable home.
